While some babies love bath time as much as they love snuggling up in one of their favorite muslin swaddle blankets, that is not the case for all babies. You are not alone if you have a baby who is opposed to bath time. The good news is there are some tips you can practice to help ease your baby into a bath time routine they can look forward to. Check out these five ways you can get your little one excited about bath time.
Make Sure Your Little One Is Rested and Fed
If your baby is hungry or tired when you start bath time, chances are both of you are about to have an unpleasant experience. Make sure your little one is well-rested. If it is anywhere near a nap or bedtime, save bathing for another time. Once your baby has had time to digest after feeding is an excellent time to introduce bath time. While your large burp cloths protect you from the mess of burping and are highly absorbent, there’s nothing like washing up after a mealtime mess.
Don’t Start with the Tub
Sometimes the big tub and the loud rushing water are a little overwhelming for your baby. If they aren’t responding well to bath time in the tub, go ahead and forget about it for now. Try starting with a smaller space, like the sink or an infant bathtub. And instead of letting the water run from the faucet, try filling up a bucket with warm water and slowly pouring it over your baby, starting with their toes. This can help ease them into the experience.
Keep the Space Warm and Snug
Nobody wants to get out of the tub to a cold room! Keep the space nice and cozy before bath time so there is no chance of chills. Just as you don’t want to startle your baby with the temperature of the water, you don’t want to surprise them with the temperature of the air afterward.
Follow Up with a Warm and Cozy Hooded Towel
Again, for your baby to enjoy bath time, you must make it a comfortable experience, which means finishing up with a soft, warm hooded towel. You can even make drying off a fun part of the bath time experience by wrapping them in the towel and helping them “fly” around the room.
Keep a Routine
Consistency is key whenever you’re trying to make a routine. Try to have bath time around the same time and keep the process pretty much the same. This may help your baby start to expect their bath, and they won’t want to miss it. Say hello to easy bathing with your baby.
